GSN Review: Crave Liqueurs

DeKuyper & Sons is a brand which has a rich and spirited history, but perhaps not in the way you suppose.  The company began over 300 years ago as barrel coopers for established Holland brewers, and distillers of genever.  Almost sixty years later, they launched their own genever distillery.  Fast forward to 1911, when they began making a small line of liqueurs.  About fifty years after this, their liqueurs were regularly outselling their genever.  The Jim Beam Co. saw potential in the brand and bought the rights to make and distribute the product under the name John Dekuyper and Son in the U.S.A. which is what you’ll find on the shelves of your local liquor store today.  They still are one of the best selling makers of liqueurs in the world.  Fittingly enough, due to their financial success, the Dekuyper company was granted the title “Royal” by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on their 300th anniversary in 1995.

They regularly expand their product line with new and trendy flavors.  I was sent two from the new “Crave” line for review.

Crave Chocolate Cherry Liqueur (30 proof)
Visual: Dark cola syrup brown.
Nose: Very intense cherry scent with undercurrent of chocolate.
Taste: Sweet and somewhat candy-like. Neither the chocolate or cherry seem particularly up front, but it’s very much like a chocolate and cherry hard candy.
Finish: Lingering sweetness and a mild touch of chocolate.
Overall: Somewhat nondescript and syrupy.
GSN Rating: C

Crave Chocolate Chili Liqueur (30 proof)
Visual: Very dark brown.
Nose: Lots of dark chocolate with just a hint of spice.
Taste: Quite spicy, but not overly hot.  Just right.  The chocolate plays a nice supporting role and makes a cohesive duet.
Finish: The chili heat lasts a good long time.  Great as a winter time warmer.
Overall: Try this on it’s own on the rocks, and also as a  great addition to coffee, hot chocolate or in homemade chili.
GSN Rating: B+
