Going back about 10 years or so, this drink hails from a sadly now defunct bar called Excelsior. Whether it was created by manager Jason Cooper or another bartender, I’m not sure; but it certainly was ahead of it’s time by the inclusion of basil. Many of us have used basil in gin based cocktails, but calling for aged rum is pretty forward thinking.
Anyway, love the simplicity, the flavor profile… and damn this goes down smooth. I might cut back on the simple, and even use an anejo rum next time. But, gosh, it’s summer in a glass!
4 fresh mint leaves
4 fresh basil leaves
5 slices lime
1oz simple syrup
3oz dark rum
Garnish: 1 fresh basil leaf
Muddle mint, basil and lime with syrup in mixing glass. Add ice and rum. Shake well and strain into ice-filled old-fashioned glass. Garnish with basil leaf.
