Imbibing Mr. Boston: Blackjack Cocktail

IMG_3681-800Every so often, I come across a cocktail in the Mr. Boston Guide that I just don’t care for.  This is one of them.  The original version of this can be traced back ninety-nine years ago to a book simply called Drinks by Jaques Straub who worked at the venerable Pendennis Club in Louisville, KY.  (The Pendennis Cocktail is much better, by the way).

Anyway, the original Blackjack called for equal parts of Kirschwasser, Cognac and cold coffee served in a glass rimmed with sugar.  This is a much better recipe, as if you think about it, you will realize that there is no sweetener in this drink as published in the Mr. Boston Guide.  If you don’t feel like rimming the glass, just add a quarter ounce of simple syrup to the cocktail, and all will be well.

I decided to make my drink in a traditional Irish Coffee glass, served neat.  I think it makes for a better presentation than on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass.

1oz cherry-flavored brandy
0.5oz brandy
1oz cold brewed coffee

Shake with ice and strain into ice-filled old-fashioned glass.
