GSN Review: Deep Eddy Vodkas

DEHS_logoIt’s true that vodka can be made from any fermentable grain, but relatively few are made from corn.  Deep Eddy uses this as it’s base, and then adds other natural ingredients for their Sweet Tea and Ruby Red versions.  Based in Austin, Texas, Deep Eddy has only been on the scene since 2010, but have a wide distribution across the US.

So, what is Deep Eddy?  No, it’s not the name of a spiritual guru named Edward.  It’s actually named after a popular swimming hole in the Colorado River which runs through Austin, Texas.  Believe it or not, at one time it was home to a major tourist attraction which featured a diving horse!  It’s also inspired a song by Jimmie Dale Gilmore called “Deep Eddy Blues”.  You can listen to a version of it here, while you sip the vodkas.

Deep Eddy Vodka (80 proof)
Visual: Clear.
Nose: Sweet, minerals, slight peppermint.
Taste: Smooth, slightly sweet, with an almost salty character.  Lots of character considering it’s a ten-time distillation in a column still.
Finish: Somewhat dry with a hint of bitterness and the salty notes in mentioned above.
Overall: A vodka with body and perfectly designed for classics like a Bloody Mary or a Long Island Iced Tea.
GSN Rating: B

Deep Eddy Sweet Tea (70 proof)
Visual: Cola syrup brown.
Nose: Brewed Black Tea.  Lots of tannin.
Taste: Quite sweet, and with an unusual medicinal quality.  I’m somewhat reminded of the root-like flavor of Moxie Soda.  The tea seems more subdued than other tea flavored spirits I’ve had.
Finish: I’m left with a lingering tea flavor that seems natural and quite tannic.
Overall: I think this will benefit from the addition of ice and lemon.
GSN Rating: B

Deep Eddy Ruby Red (70 proof)
Visual: Slightly opaque pink.
Nose: Just like fresh pink grapefruit.  Lovely and mouth-watering.
Taste: Tart, but with enough sweetness to be extremely well-balanced.  Amazingly natural and juice-like.  It’s as if you took fresh squeezed pink grapefruit and magically turned it into vodka.
Finish: Lingering sweet fruit notes leave your mouth feeling like you just had half a grapefruit.
Overall: Hands down, the best grapefruit vodka I’ve ever had.  It is a spirit that I keep coming back to.  Absolutely luscious.
GSN Rating: A+
