Hudson Whiskey celebrates the return of fall with the third batch of its perennially popular Maple Cask Rye variant this September! Aging rye whiskey in casks that have held artisanal syrup imparts a natural, rounded maple sweetness with notes of toasted vanilla, black tea, and pancake-perfect maple syrup. This limited-edition whiskey is the fifth line extension in the Hudson Whiskey portfolio, best known for its Baby Bourbon.
Hudson Whiskey is the creation of Brian Lee and the father-son team, Ralph and Gable Erenzo. The whiskey is distilled at the Tuthilltown Spirits distillery in New York’s Hudson Valley. As the first whiskey made in New York since the end of Prohibition, Hudson Whiskey has established itself as a pioneer of the craft spirits movement. In 2012, when the Hudson Whiskey team was approached by a maple syrup tapper looking to buy 10-gallon bourbon barrels in which to age his maple syrup, they saw an opportunity to innovate, and turned the request into a partnership. Now, after aging his maple syrup in Hudson bourbon casks, the maple tapper sends back his maple syrup-cured casks, which the Hudson Whiskey team fills with rye whiskey. The whiskey then rests in the casks for an additional four months to allow the flavors inside to blend. This cask finish technique creates a well-balanced taste profile of maple sweetness with all of the spiciness of rye whiskey, and no additional ingredients.
Hudson Maple Cask Rye Whiskey (92 proof)
Visual: Maple syrup brown.
Nose: Tons of high notes with spicy rye taking center stage. The maple notes add a touch of breakfast-like cheer.
Taste: A lovely sweet whiskey that is very much a rye, but with enough of a push of maple sugar that the peppery notes are enveloped in a warm, autumnal richness. This becomes ever more apparent with each sip. Imagine rye toast with a thin layer of maple syrup. Mmmm….
Finish: Medium long with a lingering sweetness that tapers off while the rye warmth and spice takes a final bow.
Overall: As with all of the Hudson whiskies, this is craft distilling at its finest. An amazing whiskey that will invite you to become close friends. Try this in an Old-Fashioned and be transformed.
