GSN Review: Montanya Exclusiva Rum

Montanya Exclusiva, a limited release only available in Colorado is barrel aged for two years in an American White Oak barrel that previously aged Colorado whiskey.   The rum is then transferred for an additional 6 months to a French Oak barrel that previously aged Sutcliffe Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and Port.   This 3 year aged rum is proofed with mountain spring water from a well under the distillery.

Montanya Distillers was originally founded in Silverton, Colorado in 2008 by Karen and Brice Hoskin. The original Distillery was on Blair Street in Silverton, CO in a 100 year-old, 800 sq. foot stone building. The complete operation was on three levels, requiring a LOT of heavy lifting and pumping of distilled spirits between floors. Fermentations were done in the basement, distilling and tastings on the main level, and aging and bottling on the top floor.

In the summer of 2011, the Hoskins relocated the distillery to Crested Butte to help accommodate the company’s rapid growth.

Montanya Exclusiva Rum (80 proof)
Visual: Rich orange-gold.
Nose: Loads of caramel, butterscotch and wisps of vanilla. Dessert-like and decadent.
Taste: Brown bread with a curious high and dry character that transforms this into an elegant sipper. As time wears on, dried currants, raisins and figs playfully tease the palate.  A medieval feast.
Finish: Medium long with a crisp end that speaks of pleasant finality.
Overall: An excellent rum that works just as well in a rum old-fashioned, as it does neat or with a single rock.  If you can procure a bottle, do so.
