GSN Review: Laphroaig Cairdeas Fino Cask

Each year, Laphroaig Distillery Manager, John Campbell, crafts a limited edition malt to celebrate friendship (“Cairdeas” in Gaelic). Released in limited quantities stateside, the 2018 iteration of Cairdeas Fino Cask, laid to rest in Warehouse 8 and 10,  uses a double maturation process in first-fill bourbon casks, followed by Fino Sherry Casks.

Laphroaig (La-‘froyg) literally means “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay.” It is one of only a few distilleries that still uses traditional malting floors and dries and infuses its own malt with the thick blue smoke from old peat-fired kilns. It’s also the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky to bear a Royal Warrant bestowed by HRH Prince Charles.

Laphroaig Cairdeas Fino Cask (103.6 proof)
Visual: Medium-light gold.
Nose: Peat smoke with a fruity undertone. Cigar-like.
Taste: Medium smoke covering a smooth distillate patinaed by characteristic Sherry brilliance. A perhaps more feminine and delicate approach to the usual powerhouse of Islay whiskies.
Finish: Medium-long with the smoke fading rather quickly and the high notes of the sherry cask taking awhile longer to bid farewell.
Overall: For fans of Islay, Laphroaig and Scottish whiskies, this marks a high point in the craft.
GSN Rating: A
