GSN Review: Pierre Ferrand Renegade Barrel No. 1 Cognac

The first release in Pierre Ferrand’s Renegade Barrel series, this cognac first matured in a 350 liter Cognac barrel, then further aged in a 225 liter Sauternes barrel. Pierre Ferrand is a house based in the Grande Champagne region of France and as always with Ferrand cognac releases, it is made entirely from grapes from Grande Champagne.

Pierre Ferrand in its current form was founded in 1989, when Alexandre Gabriel purchased the family firm and quickly began to improve its profile. The wider business, Maison Ferrand, also owns Plantation Rum, Citadelle Gin, Landy Cognac and several other brands, many of which have been previously reviewed on GSN.

Pierre Ferrand Renegade Barrel No. 1 (96 proof)
Visual: Dark gold.
Nose: Dark, enveloping palette of eau de vie, oaken vanilla bean, and a saucy and very fruit-forward high grape note. This is a well-balanced and sensational brandy.
Taste: Like a dessert in a glass, this Cognac is sweet, slightly fruity and semi-creamy on the tongue. Rich brandy is lightened by a high sweet tone from the Sauternes cask. Elegant, lovely, and cohesive.
Finish: Medium long, with more of the grape notes coming out at the end. The fade is even and lingering.
Overall: One of the best Cognacs we’ve ever tasted. This is a fast favorite at the GS offices. We hope that this expression is brought back into regular availability soon.
GSN Rating: A++
