GSN Review: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch A122

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof releases, the first release of 2022 delivers on the consistency of quality and heritage the series is known for. A122 kicks off at 120.8 proof and retains the qualities the small batch is known for – 12 years old and non-chill filtered.

Barrel Proof enjoys acclaim as Whisky Advocate’s 2017 Whisky of the Year, received Double Gold and “Best Small Batch Bourbon – 11 Years and Older” at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC); 95 Points at F. Paul Pacult’s 2018 Ultimate Spirits Challenge, Wine Enthusiast’s #2 American Whiskey in 2019, Double Gold from the 2020 SIP Awards, and Best Small Batch Bourbon 11Y+ from the 2021 ASCOT Awards.

GSN’s Remarks: Another fantastic release. This one has a BBQ smokiness to it that just begs for a plate of pulled pork and baked beans to enjoy between sips. The nose is full of high notes with a mouthwatering maple, brown bread, pecan pie essence. The flavor is intensely compact poured straight, with a spectrum of notes from deep woody bass rumblings to high keening sweet corn. With a bit of water to bring the proof down, things open into a wider vista, with each element playing a significant role. The finish is long, sweet and leaves you thinking once again of BBQ. A fun and impressive whiskey that hits all the right marks. GSN Rating: A+
