Even though tequila has been around for far longer, the first legal distillery only dates back to 1758 when a license was granted to Jose Cuervo in Jalisco, Mexico. Surprisingly, the production of tequila was banned shortly afterwards, and it wasn’t until 1795 when King Carlos IV again granted the right to distill back to the company. In the year 1800, a barrel aged tequila finally saw the light of day. Thus, the eponymous title of this Mexican spirit.
Launched in 1975, Cuervo 1800 Tequila (now just 1800) has enjoyed much success in bringing awareness of agave based spirits to the U.S. They have expanded their range to include blanco, reposado, anejo and limited edition 100% blue weber tequilas, as well as a coconut flavored version and a bottled Margarita. Milenio was first introduced in the year 2000 as both a 25th anniversary expression and a collectible for the turn of the century. In 2014, the company debuted a second edition which is an extra anejo with a second aging done in ex-Cognac French Oak casks.
1800 Milenio Tequila (80 proof)
Nose: Woody with a lot of spice and tannin.
Taste: Initially agave forward, it immediately changes into a gingerbread character that has a sugary sweet finish. Almost creamy and dessert-like in essence, everything wraps up in a dry spicy finale.
Finish: Fairly long, with hints of spice bread, burnt sugar, and toasted vanilla.
Overall: Quite different. A tequila that on one hand seems a bit over-aged and less tequila flavored than expected, and on the other reminiscent of a well aged spiced rum. Interesting and unique, but not entirely the kind of agave spirit that will be to everyone’s liking.
