Basil Hayden’s Bourbon, recently announced the launch of its first-ever innovation and limited edition product offering — Basil Hayden’s Rye Whiskey.

A Kentucky straight rye whiskey, Basil Hayden’s Rye Whiskey achieves its distinctive taste with the addition of a unique, re-barreled rye. The re-barreled rye begins as a four-year-old traditional rye whiskey, which is then dumped out and further aged an additional seven years in newly charred quarter cask oak barrels. Just a touch of this re-barreled rye blended with traditional Kentucky straight rye whiskey amplifies the aroma and adds differentiating depth.

“The spicy character of rye has always been a signature part of what makes Basil Hayden’s special, so creating a rye whiskey was a natural fit,” said Rob Mason, Vice President of Bourbon at Beam Suntory. “This limited edition release gives our fans a chance to experience everything they love about Basil Hayden’s Bourbon in an interesting rye whiskey expression.”

Basil Hayden’s Rye Whiskey (80 proof)
Visual: Medium gold.
Nose: Medium char rye spice with a caramel-mint flourish.
Taste: Surprisingly thin. The rye spice is present, but seems withdrawn in context with the somewhat weak proof. Bits of caramel, butterscotch and maple sugar all make an appearance, but they are fleeting.
Finish: Medium, with a brown bread finish.
Overall: This is a tame rye that would benefit from a higher proof.  It will get lost inside of any rye forward cocktail. Decent enough for sipping, but not up to the usual basil Hayden standards.
GSN Rating: B
