Black Button Distilling, Rochester NY’s first grain to glass craft distillery, debuted New York State’s first bourbon cream this past summer. Similar in concept to an Irish Cream, Black Button uses their NYS grown Four Grain Bourbon and local cream as the basis of the product. The Bourbon is a blend of 60% Corn, 20% Wheat, 11% Malted Barley and 9% Rye.
Black Button Bourbon Cream was recently awarded the Silver Medal at the North American Bourbon and Whiskey Competition in the cream whiskey category. The double-blind competition is based on a 100-point scale, judged by styles and price categories. “This silver medal means a lot to us because it’s been awarded to the only farm fresh, New York state bourbon cream out there. We’re proud to win this award and to highlight another locally made product from locally sourced, farm to table ingredients,” said Jason Barrett, owner and head distiller of Black Button Distilling.
Bespoke Bourbon Cream (30 proof)
Nose: Vanilla and caramel cream. Very high notes of corn bourbon lie underneath.
Taste: Sweet and well-balanced. The mouthfeel is excellent with a luscious creaminess that tastes like dessert in a glass. After a second sip, the bourbon itself comes through more readily with a hefty body and some maple coloration. Definitely more character than with Irish creams, it also holds up well to serving on the rocks.
Finish: Medium long, with a lot of cream and perky bourbon leaving a lasting impression.
Overall: One of the best cream liqueurs we’ve reviewed. The fact that it’s made just 90 minutes away from the GSN offices makes it all the more appealing.
GSN Rating: A
