Gin seems on the verge of a major world-wide revival. Proof of this lies in the fact that there are now gins being produced in Scotland, bastion of countless sublime whiskies. The Balmenach Distillery in Speyside has been making whiskies for almost 200 years, but now they’ve brought that experience to Caorunn (pronounced ka-roon) gin. Starting with 100% grain spirit created in a copper pot still along with some uniquely Scottish botanicals, Caorunn is quite unique and yet at the same time very traditional.
The ingredients call for eleven botanicals in all, including rowan berry, bog myrtle, heather, dandelion and coul blush apple along with six more traditional gin based herbs, citrus and spices. Amazingly enough, even with all of this going on in the gin, there is an exceptional cohesiveness to the spirit that few others can match. For a new kid on the block, they’ve set the bar rather high. Caorunn Scottish Gin (83.6 proof)
Visual: Crystal clear.
Nose: Juniper heavy, yet expressively fresh and clean.
Taste: Crisp and dry with a slightly minty and bracing forward mouthfeel. Herbs and botanicals are exceptionally well blended, creating a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Finish: Fairly long, some spice comes through towards the end with pine and fresh-cut grass tangentials.
Overall: A perfect gin in a martini, as well as a great mixer. The slightly higher proof works well to keep the flavors in the gin bonded together. An exemplary job of master distilling!
