GSN Review: Flying Embers’ Chocolate Reishi Stout Beer & Active Ales Lion’s Mane Lager

Known best for their excellent hard kombucha, Flying Embers has delivered Chocolate Reishi Stout Beer and Active Ales Lion’s Mane Lager just in time for summertime gatherings.

Chocolate Reishi Stout Beer is an Irish style botanical brew with a superfood twist. Powered by Reishi mushrooms (known for improving energy and overall health) and adaptogens to help the body adapt to stress, the beer is combined with the added health properties of live probiotics and botanicals. Brewed with Barley Malt, it contains just 2 Carbs, 95 Calories, and is a low 4.5% ABV. GSN’s Remarks: This is one tasty brew. Notes of cocoa, with a rich boost of what can only be described as vegetal funk are perfectly balanced in a mellow, sessionable stout-like beer. We found ourselves going back again and again to this curious brew and although we might not deem it a stout in the traditional sense, it comes across as a chocolate something-or-other. Really, you have to try it for yourself, but we love beer and will be keeping it in our fridge as long as Flying Embers keeps making it. GSN Rating: A+

Active Ales Lion’s Mane Lager is brewed with organic ingredients, live probiotics, antioxidants and superfoods with 0 sugar, only 2 carbs , 85 Calories, and is an easy-going 4.2% ABV. GSN’s Remarks: This reminded us more of a mild sour ale than a lager, but it was still refreshing and tasty. No, it doesn’t taste like mushrooms, but there is a slight funkiness to this brew that adds character and body. If you’re looking for a “healthier” way to drink, this just may be the ticket for you. GSN Rating: B+
