GSN Review: Cocktail Squad Classy Casuals

Boulder-based Cocktail Squad recently expanded its collection of premium canned cocktails to eight varieties. The first two products from its new zero sugar Classy Casuals line include Whiskey Ginger Soda and Vodka Lemon Soda. These cocktails are a sessionable option for consumers who are looking to enjoy real spirits without having to compromise on quality.

“I had this lightning-bolt moment,” said Lauren Maggio, Co-Founder of Cocktail Squad. “There are so many people like us who are busy, working hard and in the throes of parenthood who would appreciate an elevated cocktail that’s convenient and portable.  Plus…the premiumization trend is here to stay and our canned single-serving, ready-to-drink cocktails have the added value of safety at a time when we’re all being careful about not sharing beverages.”

Cocktail Squad’s Classy Casuals contain 0g sugar, 0g carbohydrates and no artificial sugar substitutes. At just 90 calories, you can guiltlessly stock your cooler while keeping it classy. Classy Casuals are 5% ABV, gluten-free or gluten-removed, available in 12-ounce sleek cans and are sold in 4-packs.

GSN’s Thoughts: Of the two, we preferred the Whiskey Ginger. Somewhat reminiscent of lemon iced tea, but sparkling. Very dry, yet surprisingly tasty. The Vodka Lemon is pretty much one note. Lemon. But, that’s not to say that it doesn’t succeed at what it’s trying to be. Both of these are great for those looking to cut back on calories, as well as keep your fridge stocked for guests who are looking for a RTD cocktail. These also fit the bill at the end of the day when you’re too tired to do more than pop a pull tab.

GSN Review: Cocktail Squad Classic Canned Cocktails

Cocktail Squad co-founder Lauren Maggio was born and raised in New Orleans, so it’s fair to say that the Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler attitude runs deep in her soul. A few years ago, Lauren was immersed in the world of raising four young children.  Actively trying to find a balance between her old and new life, she rarely had babysitter back-up and dinners out were not a frequent affair.  Often times Lauren and her co-founder husband John were passing ships, but when they could, they would steal away to catch up. On one such occasion, the couple met at the bar of a new restaurant in Boulder, Colorado and had a great cocktail… they found themselves with idle time the very next evening, decided on the same bar, enjoying that same enticing cocktail. Lauren realized that while indulgent and certainly fun, this was not real life, so she asked for the recipe and the bartender kindly obliged.

Three liquor stores and $103 later, she had the makings for an elevated craft cocktail… Lauren thought, “wouldn’t other adults appreciate the ease of a fully-loaded, ready-to-drink portable cocktail?” Lauren and John had been actively investing in businesses and pursuits that embodied a balanced lifestyle: health and wellness and enjoyment, defining pillars of Boulder living.

With John’s 20+ years of experience leading and guiding companies in the food and beverage arena, Lauren knew she had the beginnings to something special.

Cocktail Squad’s offerings include Gin & Tonic, Margarita, Vodka Soda, Greyhound, Bourbon Smash and Whiskey Sour canned cocktails.

GSN’s Thoughts: These are handy if you’re having a party and don’t want to be stuck behind the bar making drinks for guests all night long. That being said, the simple cocktails (vodka soda & gin and tonic) can be skipped. Adding a spirit to a mixer is easy for anyone. The more complex cocktails are the two whiskey based ones. These were pretty tasty and worked well without any garnishing. Overall, we felt that the citrus in each cocktail was subdued and needed a fresh wedge added. The other surprise (not necessarily a bad thing) is the low alcohol content. Each of these has less than a glass of wine. So, you can have a few and not be knocked on your ass. Overall, something to keep on hand if you end up running out of booze.
