GSN Review: D. George Benham’s Gin Sonoma Dry Gin

Since the earliest recordings of gin creation in the 17th century, distillers have continuously challenged the production methods and general characteristics of the spirit. London Dry, Plymouth, Navy Strength, Genever, Old Tom, grape-based, New World – several different styles of gin have evolved and offer a wide range of taste profiles. Produced in Graton, California, D. George Benham’s Gin utilizes locally grown Meyer Lemon and Buddha’s Hand, both hand-zested to showcase vibrant, fragrant citrus characteristics. A combination of old school London Dry with a bright, citrus-forward New World style blends the best of both worlds to create Sonoma Dry style. The spirit is infused with a total of 12 botanicals, each individually vapor distilled.

D. George Benham’s Gin Sonoma Dry Gin (90 proof)
Visual: Clear.
Nose: Sprightly juniper essence with a welcoming waft of friendly citrus. Perky and crisply appointed.
Taste: At first, solidly in the London Dry camp, then elements of lemon come to the fore adding a citrus balance. Still, this is a very dry gin and quite traditional for the most part.
Finish: Medium long, with a semi-chalky mouthfeel at the end.
Overall: Excellent for Martinis and gin-forward cocktails.  The distillate is well crafted and the flavor profile is spot on.  Well done!
GSN Rating: A-
