GSN Review: EnGINe Gin

Disaronno International recently announced the launch of a new Italian gin, inspired by motorsports and crafted with 100% organic Italian ingredients. EnGINe Gin is the creation of fashion and spirits entrepreneur Paolo Dalla Mora, who drew inspiration from his love of classic cars and motorcycles and his enjoyment of traditional North Italian flavors.

Made in small lots in Langhe (Piedmont) the heart of Italy’s automobile industry in a traditional copper John Dore pot still, EnGINe Gin incorporates traditional Italian botanicals that are 100% organic, including Ligurian sage, lemon, licorice root, and damask rose. Vacuum distillation using a rotary evaporator, EnGINe Gin is packaged not in a bottle but a unique tin oil can that evokes the classic age of automobiles.

GSN’s Remarks: While the nose features juniper prominently, the initial flavor characteristic is sage. Very sage, indeed. After a minute or two, this quiets down, leaving high notes of lemon and sweet licorice. The juniper plays a more distant part in the overall performance, with a soft briskness. Definitely a unique and novel type of gin quite unlike any of the hundreds that we’ve sampled over the years. The can made for an interesting talking piece in the GSN offices, and led to some interesting conversations. We’d recommend trying this with a classic G&T to start and then move on to sours. GSN Rating: A-
