GSN Review: Redemption Wheated Bourbon

Redemption Whiskey recently expanded its portfolio by releasing a Wheated Bourbon. Redemption is known for their rye whiskey and their high rye content bourbon. While most wheat-forward bourbons have between 20% and 30% of the grain in the mash bill, Redemption’s Wheated Bourbon contains a blend of 45% winter wheat, 51% corn, and 4% malted barley. It is then rested for four years in new oak barrels before bottling.

“The release of our Redemption Wheated Bourbon represents the first in a series of limited production expressions that we will bring to market over the next few years,” says Tom Steffanci, President of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits.

Redemption Whiskey is distilled in Indiana and bottled in small batches, with the batch number printed on each label.

Redemption Wheated Bourbon (96 proof)
Visual: Sunny gold.
Nose: Rich, engaging brown sugar and cinnamon nose. Actually warm cinnamon bread with a bourbon glaze sums it up perfectly. A southern after dinner pastry in a glass.
Taste: Lightly sweet at first, but a darker and more serious char character comes into the picture suddenly. The initially playful flavor grows more somber and takes you on a journey of introspection. Part of this comes from the high-proof, but also the wheat/new oak blend makes for a bourbon that is anything but soft.
Finish: Long and with some sweet apple and baking spice essences.
Overall: We always enjoy Redemption whiskies, and this one doesn’t disappoint. This is a well done, full-bodied bourbon that could easily find an audience year round.
GSN Rating: A
