GSN Review: Drumshanbo Sausage Tree Irish Vodka

Drumshanbo (meaning a ridge of the old huts) is a small town situated in the heart of County Leitrim, Ireland. Drumshanbo is surrounded by a scenic area of rolling hills, woodlands, lakes and the Sliabh an Iarainn & Arigna mountains. Founded by Patrick J Rigney in 2014, The Shed Distillery is the first distillery in the Irish region of Connacht for more than 100 years.  The distillery launched its first product, Gunpowder Irish Gin, in 2016.

The Shed uses traditional methods of copper pot and column stills, and PJ experiments with wild grains, Irish flora, and exotic botanicals. The distillery utilizes 5 copper pot stills – 3 focused on Irish Whiskey, and 2 on Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin – and 2 copper column stills – focusing on Sausage Tree Pure Irish Vodka. All were especially made by Arnold Holstein in Germany and brought over to Drumshanbo.

To make Sausage Tree Pure Irish Vodka, Rigney uses Irish grain, the fruits of the Kigelia Africana, also known as the “Sausage Tree” due to their shape, and wild Irish nettle.

GSN’s Remarks: Clean scent in the glass with an inviting aroma. A warm, somewhat soft mouthfeel leads to a mineral forward creaminess with light touches of vanilla and green peppercorn. The finish ends with a dry mouthfeel and slight chalkiness. A vodka with character, body and life. Another winner from the folks at Drumshanbo. GSN Rating: A+
