GSN Review: Bayab Palm & Pineapple Gin

Spearhead Spirits, a black-owned, founder-led business with the aim of putting premium African spirits in the world’s bars, this month released a new expression of African grown gin to coincide with Black History Month. Bayab Palm & Pineapple Gin is a copper pot distilled gin that’s made with Nigerian and Ghanian palm sap, South African pineapple and baobab from Ghana and Zambia and is distilled in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

This Pan-African gin is handcrafted using eight botanicals all grown on the African continent that are steeped for 14 days to release their flavor into the spirit. The Baobab fruit is sourced from Ghana and Zambia, the juniper from Kenya, the coarse salt from Botswana, while the orange peel, cinnamon, coriander, rosemary and pineapple all come from South Africa.

The African sunshine powers the production of Bayab and shines through in its gin. The fully solar powered distillery produces more sustainable energy than it uses, with the excess sent back into the townships.

Spearhead Spirits invest in community development across Africa; including funding the Baobab research center in Northern Ghana with the ambition to replant one million Baobab Trees.

GSN’s Remarks: Fresh cut pineapple on the nose, with a more reticent perfume of juniper. Very soft mouthfeel, with a mellow pineapple flavor that opens up into a cooling yet spice colored character. The more subtle botanicals create a solid gin based palate that works well alongside the pineapple. The body is medium, while the finish is quite long and ends on a fruity note. Overall, this is an excellent and wonderful gin for creating new cocktails behind the bar. Highly recommended. GSN Rating: A++
